Description:
Ziba King was born in Ware County, Georgia on March 12, 1838. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and after the war moved to Tampa, Florida to open a dry goods business and later moved to Fort Ogden just south of Arcadia, Florida to open a store. At approximately the same time he started acquiring cattle and became a rancher. As his herd of cattle grew he eventually became known as the "cattle king of South Florida." He farmed and had large citrus groves and vast real estate holdings in the area. Ziba became a banker and was the president of the First National Bank of Arcadia, vice president and director of the Exchange Bank of Tampa and a director of the National Bank of the State of Florida. He further became involved in politics and civic affairs by becoming a judge, elected to the Florida Senate and House of Representatives. Locally he served on the school board. At the time of his death on March 7, 1901 his assets made him the wealthiest cattle baron in the State of Florida. He is buried in the family plot in the Ziba King Memorial Recreation Park in Fort Ogden on the site of the former King Family homestead.
