Local background -

In the 1991 Marton census, the Young family were living in Church Street. Father James Joseph, aged 34 vears was born 1867 in Whitnash. His mother Susan Agnes aged 28 years Was born in Marton. It is recorded that they had four children, Eva7, Lewis 4 , Arthur 3 and Lily 1, all born in Marton. Father James was a ailway platelayer with LNWR.

In 1911 there were eight children and Lewis had moved from the family home to live with his Uncle William (Wimbush) who occupied a property near the Manor House, High Street Marton. Lewis was now 14 and working as a gardener for Major Beach, The Manor House gathorpe. The children still at home were Eva now 17 and a general servant, Arthur 13 and employed in a bakery, Lily aged 11, George 8 and both at school, Hilda 3 , Daisy 1 and an unnamed infant daughter 3 days old. All the children were born in Marton.

Lewis’s War Background -

In 1915, we know Lewis was 18 years of age and old enough to enlist into the Army. His enlistment records have not survived, so we are unaware of his service History. We know that he enlisted at Coventry."
