Statute in front of the city hall.

Beachcombing or beach treasure is the search on the beach for washed-up items. Often they are objects that have been thrown overboard from a ship or that come from a ship that has perished.

Found goods traditionally belong to the person who lost them. In the case of goods washed ashore, this can be the owner of a ship. If the goods were insured, they belong to the insurance company. The goods must be returned to the authorities, that is the landlord or his representative, the beach guardian. The finder can claim part of the finder's wages.

Often the right to washed up goods was leased by the government to the highest bidder. In contrast, residents of the Wadden Islands invoked the right to freely use dunes, beaches and other community lands. On Terschelling, this right was also referred to as the primeval scroll.

A beachcomber was not always someone who only appropriated goods found by chance. In the old days, a fire was sometimes built on the beach to deceive the ships and lure them to the coast, causing the ships to perish and the cargo to be captured. The beachcombers cared little about the fate of the drowning
