An outbreak of yellow fever in 1871 rapidly exhausted the capacity of the old La Chacarita which was then closed. In 1887 a process of exhuming the remains started and a new La Chacarita became available again. That's the cemetery which we can visit nowadays.
It's a huge cemetery with 95 hectares (230 acres). There is an older area, with monumental tombs, and a few newer sectors. There is also a German and an English Cemetery attached to the main La Chacarita. In the German cemetery there are a few tombs of Navy staff who was part of the crew of the cruiser Graff Spee, sank in Mar de La Plata in 1939.
The most visited tomb in La Chacarita is the one of Carlos Gardel, the father of Tango, who died in an airplane crash in 1933.
