This bronze sculpture was made by the artist Frank T.S. Letterie (The Hague, 1931), commissioned by the Brielse Maas Recreatieschap and was cast by bronze foundry A Cire Perdue in Soest. It symbolizes the battle between the 'Watergeuzen' and the Spaniards, which took place in 1572. The victory of the Dutch pirates marked the beginning of the liberation of Holland and the end of the Eighty Years' War.
In June 1969 the statue was placed at the Geuzenkreek and unveiled by J. Klaasesz, Queen's Commissioner in South Holland. It remained there until 2005, until it was removed after vandalism and attempted theft. It disappeared in storage for four years, until it surfaced in 2009. Since then it has stood in the eastern part of the picturesque center of the fortified town of Brielle, its flag proudly waving in the wind.
