Located in Dunnellon is a small city park known as the Chaplin A. Dinkins, III Memorial Park. This park sits on the north bank of the Rainbow River where it empties into the Withlacoochee River.
The Rainbow River has its headwaters just 5.7 miles upstream at the Rainbow Springs. Rainbow Springs is a first magnitude spring that is ranked fourth in the state for volume discharge. Besides the headwaters spring which puts out approximately 500 million gallons of water a day there are a number of lesser springs that discharge from caves, rock crevices, and sand boils the entire length of the river. The Rainbow River is very popular with tubers and kayakers.
The Withlacoochee River originates in Central Florida near the Green Swamp. It is 141 miles long emptying in the Gulf of Mexico near Yankeetown. There are two Withlacoochee Rivers in Florida. The other one being further north, originating in Georgia and merging with the Suwannee River in Florida. It is interesting to note that this Withlacoochee River flows west from the Green Swamp area, then north, then northwest and finally westerly. The Little Withlacoochee River empties into it south of Rainbow River.
A fee is charged for using the Dinkins Park. There are picnic areas with grills, a small playground and a small roped off swimming area. A dock is available for river viewing and fishing. The coordinates for this location are taken on the dock as close to the confluence as possible. The crystal clear water of the Rainbow River merging with the tea colored waters of the Withlachoochee River can make for some interesting visual opportunities at this confluence.
