"The Moorhead Dairy Queen has been a local favorite and important part of our community since Bob and Phyllis Litherland opened the landmark in 1949. Our store is a traditional seasonal walk-up style Dairy Queen and is one of the oldest original stores in the entire Dairy Queen system. We feature an outdoor, smoke free patio dining experience under our large red and white umbrellas and we have a large parking lot for easy access to our store. We take pride in our store and work very hard to offer the highest quality products, family friendly prices and old fashion service with a smile :)" (

After serving as a paratrooper in Japan and the Philippines during World War II Bob Litherland, later to be known as "DQ Bob", Bob and his wife, Phyllis, opened the Moorhead Dairy Queen in August of 1949, an early addition to the the DQ locations. The couple is also often credited for the creation of the Dilly Bar.
This DQ does serve hot food, but is not a Grill and Chill, it is one of the old locations that can continue to do somethings differently then other locations. They have BBQ sandwiches, hot dogs, Polish sausages, and chili. So, Yes, a good old chili dog can be lunch before your ice cream.

The photo for this Waymark shows a lot of people waiting in line at the downtown Dairy Queen wearing jackets and hats. The DQ always opens for the season on March 1st and the average high temperature for opening day is 36.3°F. But traditions are traditions and it is not hard to find people in Moorhead who have joined the line on opening day.
