The MK 14 was the primary submarine-launched, anti-surface ship torpedo of World War II

Several Mark 14 Torpedo are on display in the area around USS Bowfin Submarine. One of which carries a History Marker / Sign of History.

The plaque on the torpedo reads:-

"MARK 14 STEAM-DRIVEN TORPEDO

This particular Mark 14 torpedo was carried on USS Bowlin during her fifth patrol.

The Mark 14 torpedo was the main weapon used by the fleet-type submarine. Each submarine had ten 21-inch torpedo tubes, and carried 24 torpedoes.

A torpedo tube is essentially a large naval gun, consisting of a barrel with breach and muzzle ends.

The tube uses compressed air to expel the torpedo, in the same manner that a gun uses an explosive charge to expel a bullet.

Weight-3,200 lbs.; Length-20.5 feet; Diameter-21 inches; Speed/Range-31.5 kts/9,000 yrds-or 46 kts/4,500 yds."

"Mark 14 Steam-Driven Torpedo - This was the U.S. Navy's primary torpedo in WWII. When fired, compressed air, alcohol and water were mixed and ignited in the combustion chamber to produce the steam that powered the turbines."
