In 1985, during the annual Pop-meeting in Lochem, a new rock band suddenly appeared on stage, called Normaal. Normaal is in the Achterhoek dialect something like "act normal". Their songs were written in the Achterhoek dialect and deal in particular with farming life. They played in various line-ups until they announced in 2015 that they would stop giving major concerts. The singer Bennie Jolink has many problems with his health (asthma) and was completely out of breath after each concert.
A farewell concert was given on 30th May 2019 in the tractorpulling arena in Barchem and was attended by over 20,000 fans.
As Jolink has now a new medicine against the asthma a new concert in Barchem is announced for 2020.
The fans (in Achterhoek dialect "Anhangers") wanted to honour the band with a sculpture in bronze. It's made by artist Lia Krol. The pose of the group is exactly as on the iconic picture that was taken at the Doetinchem cattle market.
The statue was unveiled on 10 May 2018 by the widow of the first drummer, Jan Manschot.
