FR Trois monuments de ce type sont présents à Montpellier, dans la pinède de La Paillade, au pied du Corum et au centre du rond-point Christophe-Colomb (ce waymark).

Le flou. Voilà ce qui règne, aujourd’hui, autour d’un octroi en pierre qui devait être mis en vente aux enchères ce dimanche 15 avril, au château de Sanilhac (près d’Uzès, dans le Gard). Ce type de bâtiment au fronton d’inspiration grec, doté de trois voûtes, a déjà dû attirer votre œil à Montpellier. En effet, la ville en possède encore trois, vestiges d’un autre temps.

Annoncé comme déjà racheté par Philippe Saurel, celui vers qui tous les regards se tournent actuellement aurait été démonté et éloigné du Clapas il y a de ça vingt ans par son propriétaire actuel qui a préféré rester anonyme. Il aurait trôné à côté du temple protestant en face de la gare, d’après son détenteur.

Origine à prouver
Pour le maire Philippe Saurel, il trônait plutôt avenue de Toulouse. Mais alors, quelle est l’origine réelle de ce bout d’histoire ? La vente estimée entre 15 000 € et 18 000 € est pour le moment gelée, tant que l’origine n’est pas administrativement prouvée. " On attend, cela pourrait être tout autant un faux ou un objet volé ", déclarait l’édile, vendredi. La brume devrait se lever mais, avant dimanche, cela est moins sûr.

Mais alors, qu’est-ce qu’un octroi ? Ces bâtiments délimitaient, en 1876, le territoire de perception d’une taxe : le droit d’octroi, sorte de barrière douanière municipale qui servait à récolter de l’argent sur les denrées qui entraient en ville. Ce droit ne sera levé qu’en 1948.

À Montpellier, on comptait 13 bureaux principaux sur les plus grands axes de communication et 15 postes d’observation sur les voies secondaires. La surveillance de cette taxe appartenait à la mairie, qui collaborait avec la régie des contributions indirectes. Un receveur, épaulé par deux préposés, assurait le service de chaque bureau.

Ce métier, d’après des témoignages d’époque, était loin d’être une partie de plaisir puisque le receveur était privé de sa famille, devant manger et dormir dans le bâtiment.

Toujours est-il que les trois monuments encore présents à Montpellier, dans la pinède de La Paillade, au pied du Corum sous forme de fontaine et au centre du rond-point Christophe-Colomb, ne seront peut-être finalement pas rejoints par l’un de leurs semblables aux fausses allures de Parthénon miniature.

The blur. This is what reigns today around a stone grant which was to be put up for auction this Sunday, April 15, at the Château de Sanilhac (near Uzès, in the Gard). This type of Greek-inspired pediment building with three arches must have already caught your eye in Montpellier. Indeed, the city still has three, vestiges of another time.

Announced as already bought by Philippe Saurel, the one to whom all eyes are currently turning would have been dismantled and removed from the Clapas twenty years ago by its current owner who preferred to remain anonymous. It would have sat next to the Protestant temple opposite the station, according to its holder.

Origin to prove
For mayor Philippe Saurel, he was rather enthroned on the avenue de Toulouse. But then, what is the real origin of this piece of history? The sale estimated between € 15,000 and € 18,000 is frozen for the moment, as long as the origin is not administratively proven. "We are waiting, it could be just as much a forgery or a stolen object," declared the councilor, Friday. The mist should be lifted but, before Sunday, it is less certain.

But then, what is a grant? These buildings delimited, in 1876, the territory of collection of a tax: the right of granting, kind of municipal customs barrier which was used to collect money on the goods which entered town. This right was not lifted until 1948.

In Montpellier, there were 13 main offices on the main communication axes and 15 observation posts on the secondary roads. The supervision of this tax belonged to the town hall, which collaborated with the management of indirect contributions. A receiver, supported by two agents, ensured the service of each office.

This job, according to testimony from the time, was far from being a pleasure since the recipient was deprived of his family, having to eat and sleep in the building.

The fact remains that the three monuments still present in Montpellier, in the pine forest of La Paillade, at the foot of the Corum in the form of a fountain and in the center of the Christophe-Colomb roundabout, may not ultimately be joined by the one of their miniature false Parthenon-like creatures.
