"Beaumont, ville médiévale renommée, a toujours été sur la route de France. Que ce soit par Coulsore vers la place-forte de Maubeuge, par Erquelinnes et Jeumont ou par la principauté de Chimay, toutes les routes passent par cette plaque tournante. L’armée française ne sait faire autrement pour gagner les rives de la Sambre.

Sur cette place, le 18 août 1914, la 11e Brigade d’Infanterie du 3e Corps d’Armée de la 5e Armée commandée par le général Lanrezac, défile fièrement sous les yeux d’une population belge qui ne cède en rien à la panique. C’est la première fois que la Belgique est en guerre depuis 1830. Les 24e et 28e Régiments d’Infanterie (RI) aiment à montrer leur bonne contenance. Sur la photo ci-jointe, le 24e RI défile devant son colonel, à cheval, sous les yeux de leurs frères d’armes qui leur rendent les honneurs.
Le 18e Corps d’Armée, commandé par le général de Mas-Latrie, passera également par cette ville et les villages environnants pour rejoindre Lobbes où aura lieu le combat d’Heuleu le 23 août 1914."

"Beaumont, a famous medieval town, has always been on the road to France. Whether via Coulsore to the fortress of Maubeuge, via Erquelinnes and Jeumont or via the principality of Chimay, all roads pass through this hub. The French army knows no other way to reach the banks of the Sambre.

On this square, on 18 August 1914, the 11th Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Corps of the 5th Army commanded by General Lanrezac, proudly parades past before the eyes of a Belgian population that does not give in to panic.
