Arbois tire son étymologie du celte "ar" et "bos" signifiant "terre fertile".
Arbois fut la première Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) française en date du 15 mai 1936. Elle est aussi aujourd’hui la première du Jura par son volume de production, de l’ordre de 45 000 hectolitres par an.
Cette appellation est répartie sur 13 communes avec un total de 843 hectares.
La Séquanie, qui n’était pas encore la Franche-Comté, et ses vins sont évoqués par Pline. Avant François 1er ou Henri IV c’est Philippe le Bel qui introduit les vins d’Arbois à la cour de France. En 1774, une liste de 14 bons plants pour le vin est publiée. Dès lors, cette sélection garantit la qualité et accroît la notoriété des vins d’Arbois. A partir de 1863, Louis Pasteur, père de l’œnologie moderne, effectue ses travaux sur les maladies des vins dans la cité. Le phylloxéra n’atteint le vignoble arboisien qu’en 1886 et le détruit par vagues jusqu’en 1895. Le 23 février 1906, alors qu’une loi taxe à la circulation des vins et des alcools et menace le droit de bouilleurs de crus, les vignerons déclenchent une grève de l’impôt. Cette même année l’une des premières coopératives de vinification de France est créée, à l’image des fruitières pour la fabrication du Comté.
Dès 1907, les vignerons obtiennent un certificat d’origine garantissant la provenance et la protection de la marque "vin d’Arbois" préfigurant la future AOC.
Ce n'est qu'en 1986 que la ville acquiert le titre de « Capitale des vins du jura ». (

La Séquanie, which was not yet Franche-Comté, and its wines are mentioned by Pliny. Before François 1er or Henri IV it was Philippe le Bel who introduced Arbois wines to the court of France. In 1774, a list of 14 good plants for wine was published. This selection therefore guarantees the quality and increases the reputation of Arbois wines. From 1863, Louis Pasteur, father of modern oenology, carried out his work on wine diseases in the city. The phylloxera reached the Arbor vineyard only in 1886 and destroyed it in waves until 1895. On February 23, 1906, when a law taxed the circulation of wines and spirits and threatened the right of vintage distillers, the winegrowers start a tax strike. In the same year, one of the first wine-making cooperatives in France was created, like fruit trees for the manufacture of Comté.
From 1907, the winemakers obtained a certificate of origin guaranteeing the provenance and protection of the "Arbois wine" brand, prefiguring the future AOC.
It was not until 1986 that the city acquired the title of "Jura Wine Capital". (
