"It is the largest Commonwealth cemetery on the continent, and therefore the most important witness to a bloody battle, that of Passendale.
Originally Tyne Cot was a reinforced position on the German front Flandern I. Tyne Cot or Tyne Cottage was the name given by the Northumberland Fusiliers to a barn near a level crossing on the road from Passchendaele to Broodseinde. The position was taken by the 3rd Australian Division on October 4, 1917, at the Battle of Passchendaele. The village of Passchendaele was taken over by the Germans on April 13, 1918 and reconquered, on September 28, 1918, by the Belgian army. In addition, in October 1917, Australian troops had set up a first aid station there.
About 12,000 soldiers are buried in the Tyne Cot cemetery. In addition, its memorial pays tribute to the 35,000 soldiers who disappeared after August 15, 1917 and who have no known grave.
On July 12, 2007, a whole new tourist infrastructure was inaugurated, with, in focus, the visitors center. The latter offers an impressive view of the ancient battlefields and is full of moving information about this cemetery and the many soldiers who died for the homeland during the Battle of Passendale. A l’origine, Tyne Cot était une position renforcée du front allemand Flandern I. Tyne Cot ou Tyne Cottage était le nom donné par les Northumberland Fusiliers à une grange située près d'un passage à niveau, sur la route reliant Passchendaele à Broodseinde. La position fut prise par la 3e Division australienne, le 4 octobre 1917, lors de la Bataille de Passchendaele. Le village de Passchendaele fut repris par les Allemands le 13 avril 1918 et reconquis, le 28 septembre 1918, par l'armée belge. Par ailleurs, en octobre 1917, les troupes australiennes y avaient installé un poste de premiers soins.
Environ 12.000 soldats sont enterrés au cimetière du Tyne Cot. De plus, son mémorial rend hommage aux 35.000 soldats disparus après le 15 août 1917 et qui ne possèdent pas de tombe connue.
Le 12 juillet 2007, une toute nouvelle infrastructure touristique a été inaugurée, avec, en point de mire, le centre des visiteurs. Ce dernier offre une vue impressionnante sur les anciens champs de bataille et regorge d’informations émouvantes au sujet de ce cimetière et des nombreux soldats morts pour la patrie au cours de la Bataille de Passendale.
