The City of San Antonio Northeast Service Center, commonly referred to as The Tool Yard, is where the large mobile equipment like buses, garbage trucks, and other large heavy equipment goes to get any repairs, maintenance or upgrades. It is the repair shop for heavy duty mobile equipment owned and operated by the City of San Antonio. Because it is a support facility, it is seldom thought of and gets little attention unless there is a construction deadline to meet or a major crisis that has to have a particular piece of equipment in working order pronto! The workers at the Tool Yard keep the fleet of City's rolling stock moving and maintained.

In 2003, the City of San Antonio decided to use the land at the entrance into their maintenance facility as a place to commemorate the workers and work done at the NE Service Center. As a result, the artist chosen decided on creating overly large representations of the kinds of hand tools the maintenance crews use to take apart and repair the various kinds of trucks and other equipment needed and used for keeping the city functioning. The eleven (11) tools created as the art exhibit are placed along the patch of land between Wurzbach Parkway and the street appropriately named Tool Yard that leads into the entrance of the Northeast Service Center. These artistic tools are a sampling of the simple but essential hand tools use to remove, repair and reinstall the parts of the equipment maintained.

The featured tool from this display is the FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER. This is an old tool used throughout history. It basically is an inclined plane, created by the flattened and slightly slopped end of a metal rod with a handle at the opposite end. The flat head end fits into a straight slot cut across the top end of a screw. The flat blade of the tip is placed into the screw's slot and twisted to turn the screw into the material it is fastening.
