Located in the Mueller neighborhood (a redeveloped airport) this is an odd shaped tower with an uneven paint job. Built by Landmark tanks, a Fort Worth firm, in 2010. The roof has openings to collect rainwater and there are slanted solar panels across the top to produce electricity. The tank itself holds about 2 million gallons of water. This is not drinking water... it is used for irrigation and in cooling towers at University of Texas to provide air conditioning. Water from the tower is distributed in pipes painted purple to prevent mix-up with drinking water. Austin has about 59 miles of purple pipes. The biggest consumers of "purple water" is the City Parks Department, the Hancock Golf Course, and the University of Texas.
