"The arms of Chambery blaspheme as follows:

Gules a cross Argent between in chief and in dexter chief a mullet Or.

This city, former capital of the Duchy of Savoy, has a patronage coat of arms, i.e., by concession of its former princes, it bears their arms, but broken. This coat of arms must have been granted to the town of Chambéry in the first half of the 17th century.

The motto, Custodibus istis (By these guardians), seems to refer to the high protection of the Dukes of Savoy who, from their great authority, supported the rights of their capital and became its guardians, or to their action as guardians of the Alpine passes".
