EN Saint-Pierre church , from which the Romanesque oculus still exists today, was one of the four parish churches of Forcalquier with Saint-Jean church (still in elevation), the the old Saint-Mary cathedral and the current Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet cathedral.
In 1627, it became the chapel of the convent built by a community of Franciscan Recollet monks. It flourished quickly, especially because of the courageous attitude of these new religious during the plague of 1630. But in 1791 there were only two, and the chapel was soon transformed into a bathing establishment, then the all places in gendarmerie and prison (one cell drives out the other!).
In 1851, the Basses-Alpes were the main and last republican bastion of resistance to the coup d'etat of Napoleon Ill, and the insurgent Forcalquiérens locked up gendarmes and sub-prefect there, transforming the place into prison ... The building was part of the city's fortifications, and its southern end is the alteration of a tower of the ramparts, of which we can still see two mouths of fire. A new prison did not replace it until 1907.
Today, the buildings have been rehabilitated and transformed into social housing , which certainly make it one of the oldest low-cost housing in France!
