A memorial 'globe' at the Chadwick Centre, International Bomber Command, Canwick, Lincoln.
"INTERNATIONAL BOMBER
COMMAND CENTRE
& LINCOLN CATHEDRAL
This memorial has been designed and produced by the Lincoln
Cathedral Works Department. The globe represents the world and
the countries which took part in the conflict. The sentiment of the
piece is Recognition, Remembrance and Reconciliation.
On the back of the stonework are fleur-de-lys carvings and trefoil
details. The fleur-de-lys is the symbol of the Cathedral's dedication
to the Blessed Virgin Mary and also the symbol of Lincoln. The trefoil
detail is symbolic of the Holy Trinity.
The compass points denote the Earth's natural tilt and the black
increments represent an artificial horizon found in wartime aeroplanes,
as Lincoln Cathedral was used as a navigational point during the conflict
by those serving Bomber Command in Lincolnshire"
