Buildings within the precinct are largely intact and date from a time when the river was important in terms of transport and defence. Individually significant buildings combine to form a cohesive group which has architectural, townscape and streetscape qualities. The relationship between the harbours and marine building and the naval offices on both the street and riversides is particularly significant.
Description
The precinct includes the following:
1) Smellie and Company Warehouse;
2) Naval offices;
3) Harbours and marine building including the present carpark area between the building and the river together with adjacent camphor laurel, jacaranda and mango trees;
4) Area of pathway leading to ferry.
Condition and Integrity
The precinct retains its integrity and as yet modern replacement buildings have not intruded within the surrounding area.
The Camphor Laurel species (CINNAMOMUM CAMPHORA) is listed by Envrionment Australia as a potential environmental weed.
Location
About 1ha, Edward Street corner Margaret Street to Alice Street, Brisbane City, comprising: Smellie and Company Warehouse, Naval Offices, Harbours and Marine building including the present car park area between that building and the river together with adjacent camphour laurel, jacaranda and mango trees, and pathway to ferry terminal from Edward Street. The single storey wooden building adjoining the harbours and marine building is excluded.
