On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between Germany and the Allies of World War I effecting a cessation of hostilities on the Western Front. Thus, November 11 became known as Armistice Day in Great Britain and among the British Commonwealth of Nations. Eventually Armistice Day became known as Remembrance Day dedicated to those who died in the Great War.
For Remembrance Day in Canada, it has become customary for a ceremony to be held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa presided over by the Governor General. The holiday as well as the National War Memorial were originally dedicated to the dead of World War I, but both have since been expanded to include World War II and subsequent conflicts.
Canada’s National War Memorial was designed by Vernon March of England whose entry in a design competition was chosen out of 127 submissions. It shows various members (22 figures in all) of different branches of the Canadian Military and other groups proceeding through a huge granite arch. An official dedication ceremony was held on May 21, 1939 which was attended by King George VI of England. (A set of postage stamps, one of which featured the new memorial, had been issued just a few days prior to the dedication honoring the Royal visit.)
The 2009 postage stamp shows just a detail from the large memorial, namely two infantrymen, one with a Vickers machine gun. The design also includes a poppy bloom. Poppies have become inextricably associated with World War I memorials on account of the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae who, by the way, was Canadian.
