Well, the automobiles are of a much more recent vintage and the television antennas are no longer present, but this scene is otherwise relatively unchanged from the time this stamp was issued in 1978.

In the late 1970s, Canada began to issue a new set of definitive postage stamps. The low values showed various flowers and trees including, of course, a sugar maple. The dollar-values featured different National Parks and the in-between values depicted street scenes from across Canada. Although the stylized designs are somewhat nondescript, they were based on actual locations. The 80c value shows the view down Cochrane St. in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The Great Fire of 1892 destroyed most of the wooden structures in St. John’s. Afterwards, a housing boom ensued which lasted through the first half of the twentieth century. Many of these new houses were built in what has been described as the Second Empire style. Features of this style are a mansard roof and hooded dormers on the third floor. Houses of this type, often attached and painted in bright colors, can be found all over downtown St. John’s.
