In Greek mythology, Triton was a god of the seas, the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. Around 350 BC Triton was no longer regarded as a god, instead, the Tritons, mystical mermen, were derived from his image.
A granite group of four Tritons, all blowing a horn made from a shell, called a Triton's Trumpet is displayed in a small park in Brandenburg, Germany. Neptune's largest moon was discovered on October 10, 1846 by William Lassell and named after the ancient god. |
