If the number of postage stamps issued to commemorate a single event is any indication, the 1976 Montreal Olympics must have been quite significant. Among the myriad postal releases drawing attention to the XXI Olympiad, was this $1.00 stamp featuring old and new Montreal landmarks. Representing yesteryear is the Notre-Dame Basilica, opened in 1829 and located in the city’s Old Town. And for a modern landmark, the stamp shows the hi-rise office complex at Place Ville Marie in downtown Montreal.
Place Ville Marie refers to an office and shopping complex consisting of the central cross-shaped tower and four smaller surrounding buildings as well as the urban plaza that connects them all. The central skyscraper is 42 stories high and was completed in 1962. At that time, it was the tallest building in Canada. Beneath the complex is a three-level shopping promenade which was the beginning of the vast underground shopping network now known as the Underground City. The complex was named for Ville Marie, the name of the original French settlement on the Island of Montreal.
