The marble statue of poet Ugo Foscolo was created by Antonio Berti in 1939. It depicts Foscolo standing while straddling a fluted cylinder. He is wearing an open collar shirt and overcoat which his is wrapping around his body with his left hand. His right hand is bent inside the coat as if he is using the overcoat as a sling.
The square base of the statue is inscribed VGO FOSCOLO
Ugo Foscolo was born Niccolo Foscolo on January 26 1778, at Zante in the Ionian Isles in what was the Republic of Venice (now Greece). A patriot, he fought with Napoleon's army against the Austrians. After Napoleon was defeated he went into exile in London. He died in London on September 10, 1827 at age 49.
