Faced with a 10 year renovation of the Centre block of the Parliament buildings, a new venue needed to be found to house the deputies and allow parliamentarians to carry out their duties. After careful consideration, it was decided to build a new, albeit temporary, House of Commons within the existing courtyard of the West Block. The new chamber is surrounded by exterior stone walls and covered by a glass dome roof which lets in natural sunlight. While the roof does not lean on the existing structure, the outside walls are now facing the inside of the new Chamber of Commons. For this reason, a gargoyle that used to be on the exterior of the building, is now inside and positioned in such a way as to monitor and listen to the debates taking place below. The gargoyle will not return outside as the temporary House of Commons is scheduled to accommodate meeting rooms once the work inside and outside the Centre Block is completed. I suspect that this gargoyle will become the most famous gargoyle in all of Ottawa.
