This is about all that remains of the New Salem community here in southern Palo Pinto County, with "New Salem Road" being the chief reminder of its existence. The cemetery is on private property, right off the road and easy to access, and the owner has no objection to legitimate visitors. If he pulls up while you're visiting, he'll tell you a little bit about what he knows. The cemetery is well-maintained, with a sturdy, modern fence.

Findagrave indicates that "There are 12 graves with markers and 4 without markers. These graves are near where there was once a church house." You'll find the same text from documents from Palo Pinto County, where New Salem is. William Riley Wallace owned the land, and his wife, Martha Ellen Wallace, died in April of 1882. There is also a Wallace infant here, and Findagrave's listing of an 1882 death year is a hint that Mrs. Wallace encountered a difficult childbirth and neither mother nor baby survived. There is one headstone (a Bleeker infant) bearing an 1881 date, but given the name "Wallace" and "1882" on the modern cemetery gate, this property had been used at least once prior to its being "officially" established as a cemetery, most likely when Mrs. Wallace and her child were buried. Several headstones do not have a death year, and then there are those four unmarked graves.
