Filip Konowal, a Ukrainian Canadian who enlisted in the 77th Batallion, while serving as a corporal with the 47th Batallion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, fought with exceptional valour in August 1917 near Lens, France. For this His Majesty King George V personally conferred the Victoria Cross on him in London on 15 October 1917

Filip Konowal, un Canadien ukrainien qui s`est engagé dans le 77e bataillon alors qu`il servait comme caporal avec le 47e battaillon du corps expéditionnaire du Canada, a combattu en France en août 1917, dans les environs de Lens, avec une bravoure exceptionnelle. Pour cette bravoure, Sa majesté le roi George V lui a présenté personnellement la croix Victoria à Londres le 15 octobre 1917.
