" En 2002, la Mairie de Saint-Benoît-des-Ondes a fait l’acquisition du moulin de la Croix, édifice du XVIIIe siècle, qui fait face à la baie du mont Saint-Michel. Ce modeste moulin occupe une position stratégique dans le village. Il est situé à l’entrée du bourg, en bordure de la route départementale conduisant au mont Saint-Michel où passent en moyenne 10000 véhicules par jour.
Les élus et des habitants de la commune ont souhaité passer commande à un artiste pour le transformer, en faire un lieu public ouvert au plus grand nombre, un signe identitaire fort pour les habitants et un monument incontournable pour les touristes.
Jean-Luc Vilmouth propose de faire du moulin de la Croix un lieu pour observer, discuter, partager, s’orienter dans le paysage, et invite les visiteurs à faire une halte sur leur parcours.
Un escalier rend accessible le toit transformé en terrasse et offre une vue panoramique incomparable sur la baie et le marais. À l’intérieur, un caisson lumineux de 360° présente une photographie de la vue.
Jadis, le moulin utilisait le vent du front de mer pour transformer les céréales provenant des champs alentours. Depuis, le site s’est modifié avec l’apparition du canal dit « des Allemands », canal antichar construit lors de la seconde guerre mondiale, aujourd’hui transformé en biez. Ce canal a créé un marais là où il se jette dans l’océan.
La vue de la terrasse et le panorama photographique permettent de recomposer l’histoire de ce paysage marin à la fois complexe et ordonné allant de la mer aux nouvelles terres cultivées et du mont Saint-Michel au bourg avec les maisons, le canal et le marais.
Jean-Luc Vilmouth a rehaussée la forme géométrique et désormais épurée du moulin par un extraordinaire garde-corps en acier corten, aux courbes rappelant les mouvements des marées sur la baie et le transformant ainsi en un objet nouveau entre architecture et sculpture. "
