The town of Birnam in Perthshire lies on the bank of the River Tay directly opposite the river from the neighbouring town of Dunkeld. Its main street features a number of buildings built in the middle of the 19th century around the time that the railway from Perth was opened. One of them was the Birnam Hotel, built in 1850 by James Gillespie Graham and still a prominent building on the northern side of Perth Road.

A series of blue plaques marking the Birnam Heritage Walk adorn many features around the area and one is attached to the hotel beside the entrance. It reads as follows:

'Birnam Hotel

1850. Built in Saxon Gothic style for Sir William Stewart of Murthly to replace Birnam Inn.'
