The land east of the Big Sioux River was ceded in 1851 by the Santee Sioux, and west of the river by the Yankton Sioux in 1858. In 1857, Noble's Wagon Road was built through the County with an improved ford of the Big Sioux River near the settlement of Medary, which was the County Seat from 1871 to 1879. Brookings County was created in 1862. Most towns began in 1879 when the Northwestern Railroad crossed the county, and others when roads pushed north in 1884. A brief history of Moody County is on the obverse side of the historic marker. Medary, Oakwood, and Fountain became ghost towns, with Brookings the county seat. In 1861, State College was created, opening its doors in 1864.
