E.M. Viquesney sculpted
The Spirit of the American Navy as a companion piece to his more well known
Spirit of the American Doughboy. This sculpture was first dedicated on May 30, 1929. This copy in front of the Kiowa County Courthouse is one of only seven known to exist. It first stood at the site of the Memorial Bridge over the North Fork of the Red River on State Highway 9 – the county line between Hobart and Granite, Oklahoma.
The sculpture was removed from the bridge in 1969, and placed in storage. After restoration by James A. Pitt, the sculpture was rededicated on November 11, 1978 at its present location.
The bronze sculpture stands on a three foot high granite base, on which is engraved: "Dedicated to Veterans of All Wars". It depicts a World War I sailor in uniform, holding his pillbox hat high in the air in his right hand.
