"The Tiradentes Palace is a neoclassical public building in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . It is the seat of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro . It is located at the intersection of Presidente Antonio Carlos Avenue with San José Street in the Centro neighborhood . Between 1926 and 1960 it was the headquarters of the National Congress of Brazil . It was designed by architects Archimedes Memoria and Francisque Couchet. He was named in tribute to Alferéz Joaquim José da Silva Xavier , better known as Tiradentes. ...

The first construction was a colonial building called Casa da Câmara e Cadeia. This was built in 1640 and housed the city's tax finance center, the site of legislative decisions and, on its lower floor, a prison called Cadeia Velha . Where Ensign Tiradentes spent his last hours in 1792. After being sentenced, he was taken to Tiradentes Square , where he was executed.

There, the Senate headquarters of the Chamber worked, while continuing to be a prison, until in 1808 it was transferred to Calle del Rosario and the prison was changed to the Aljube Chain, due to the arrival of the royal family. The Chamber of Deputies worked there until 1914, when due to the poor conditions of the building it was transferred to the Monroe Palace.

The imperial parliament building was demolished in 1922. Instead, the architects Archimedes Memoria and Francisque Couchet designed the Tiradentes Palace, which was inaugurated in May 1926. With the establishment of the Novo State in 1937 became the headquarters of the Department of Press and Propaganda (DIP), which was responsible for controlling and censoring the media. In 1945, with the end of the Novo State, it again sheltered the Chamber of Deputies until several decades later. ] From Washington Luiz to Juscelino Kubitscheck , all the presidents of Brazil took office in this compound.

In 1960 , with the change of the Federal Capital for Brasilia , the city of Rio de Janeiro passed to the status of the State of Guanabara and the Tiradentes Palace went on to host the Legislative Assembly of the State of Guanabara . This existed until 1975 , when it merged with the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Tiradentes Palace went on to house the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro . In the 2000s the palace was restored."
