"In 1520 the Rev James Beresford sometime vicar of this parish [Wirksworth] founded two scholarships and two fellowships at St John's college Cambridge to which this school along with those of Ashbourne and Chesterfield is entitled after the relatives of the founder The benevolent founder of this school also established six almshouses for poor men"
