A pair of well worn lions, a testament to their age, guard the main entrance to the Cathedral of Naples. The lions are recumbent and facing each other. The northernmost lion is facing left and seems to have his right paw on a rock. The southernmost lion is facing right and has his right paw on a sphere.
The Gothic style Cathedral of Naples was commissioned by King Charles I of Anjou in 1272 and consecrated in 1315. Construction continued into the 14th century. It is commonly called The Cathedral of San Gennaro, who is the patron saint of Naples.
