The Galleria Umberto I is a public shopping gallery designed by Emanuele Rocco and built between 1887 and 1891. It is covered by a huge glass dome. Directly underneath the dome is a large compass rose, 25' in diameter, constructed of multicolor mosaic tiles.
In the center of the compass rose are two interlocking squares forming an eight pointed star. Eight triangular rays expand out from the center indicating directions. The four cardinal directions have banners that are labeled NORD (N), EST (E), SVD (S), OVEST (W).
