The Barber Institute of Fine Art is the oldest purpose-built space for the study of art history in the UK as it was the first to be designed and opened. It can be found close to the East Gate of The University of Birmingham in Edgbaston.

It was designed by Robert Atkinson and it is a Grade II listed Art Deco building and was the first purpose-built space for the study of art history in the UK. It was opened in 1939 by Queen Mary, the building was described by historian Sir John Summerson as representing 'better than almost any other building (except, perhaps the RIBA in Portland Place) the spirit of English architecture in the 1930s'.
