This international border crossing point links the two nations of Laos and Vietnam. The crossing consists of two border check points, one for each country. On the Laotian side a visa on arrival is available for most nationalities, but on the Vietnamese side your visa must be arranged at a Vietnamese embassy before arrival (normal procedure).
In order to cross the border you must first enter one of these checkpoints, be stamped out of the country, then travel across the border to the opposite checkpoint and then have your passport stamped in. Expect to be stopped several times along the way in order to have your passport inspected. On the Vietnamese side fees are charged for entry (depending on your visa type and nationality). On the Laotian side a one month visa is around $30 (varies depending on nationality). Ensure you have local currency or US dollars to pay.
The two immigration offices are each about 300m inside their respective borders.
On the Laotian side there is only the immigration building itself, but on the Vietnamese side there are shops and a 24 hour coffee shop!
The nearest Laotian town is the small town of Attapeu. On the Vietnamese side the town of Ngoc Hoi.
Overall, a little tedious, but no hassles in crossing.
