The ornate Spire of San Domenico was begun in 1656 as a as votive offerings to celebrate the end of and deliverance from the plague. It was designed in the Baroque style by Cosimo Fanzago and built by the royal architect Francesco Antonio Picchiati. Construction was suspended in 1680, resumed, and completed in 1737 by the architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. The monument is topped by a by a statue of San Domenico di Guzman ( Saint Dominic of Guzman), founder of the Dominican Order.
