The Veterans Memorial Bridge was formally dedicated on 17 June, 2009 as a memorial to honor all who have served in the military of the United States of America.

Cut stone signs, large enough to be read by people driving across the bridge, are located on the East and West sides of the bridge. On the south side of the bridge, above the river and the North Dakota bank of the river, are ten metallic obelisks that stand on red stone plinths. On the road facing side of each plinth is a large colorful seal or emblem. From East to West they are, Army, Navy, Marine Corp, Air Force, Coast Guard, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans and Vietnam Veterans of America. The dedication ceremony included a fly-over by two P-51 Mustangs.

The bridge is the site of ceremonies to honor the men and women who served to protect the rights of American citizens. The bridge is also the site of many political rallies and protests where citizens are exercising those rights.
