An original wooden structure stood on this spot erected in 1853.
It was replaced by the current lighthouse in 1862.
The construction is of the same material as the nearby black lighthouse but has been painted white.
The lamps and housings were manufactured by Chance Brothers in England.
The original warning light was converted to gas in 1890 and then converted to electricity in 1924.
The lighthouse forms the front, or low, of a system of lights that gives mid-channel direction when in line with the High Light.
The light is no loger manned and is now automated.
