It is notable that one of Helena, Montana's biggest movers and shakers, Thomas Cruse, is buried in the centerpiece of Resurrection Cemetery, a mausoleum he shares with his wife, daughter, and several family members. By contrast, Senator Walsh is buried with his own family just to the west of the mausoleum, and his grave is marked by a simple granite headstone:

Thomas J. Walsh
U.S. Senator

---

"I have fought a good fight;
I have finished my course;
I have kept the faith."
II Tim. IV-7

1859 -- 1933

-----

For a bigger contrast, compare Senator Walsh's role in the Teapot Dome Scandal with that of Jake Hamon.

Description:
Thomas James Walsh was born in Wisconsin in 1859. As a young man, he was a teacher, but he became a lawyer, eventually (1889) marrying Elinor McClements, with whom he had a daughter, Genevieve. They traveled through the Dakota Territory before settling in Helena in 1890, where Walsh worked as an injury lawyer.

Walsh became active in politics, losing out on being elected to Congress in 1906, but in 1912, he was sent to Washington by the Montana state legislature, which was the practice at the time. He was popular and re-elected multiple times, serving three terms and part of a fourth.

His legal skills were put to use when he headed the investigation into the Teapot Dome Scandal, and he scrutinized the country's electric industry, leading to the break-up of several monopolies and important regulation. President-elect Roosevelt nominated Walsh as his Attorney General, where he probably would have made waves, but it wasn't to be, as Walsh died of a heart attack while en route to Roosevelt's inauguration.
