On August 4, 1977, postage stamps were issued by both the United States and Canada commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Peace Bridge which connects Fort Erie, ON with Buffalo, NY. Typically, joint postage stamp issues share a common design but that was not the case with this one. Although both stamps have a stylized view of the bridge, the U.S. stamp shows the complete span while the Canadian version only shows a single pier. Also, the view on the U.S. stamp is from the south but on the Canadian version it’s from the north. Both stamps show the bridge from the Canadian side, however.
The Peace Bridge was so named to celebrate 100 years of peace between Canada and the United States (as measured from the end of the War of 1812 when forts stood on both sides of the river). This theme of 100 years of peace made sense during the early planning phases which were well underway by 1914, but small interruptions like World War I delayed the actual opening of the bridge until 1927. By then there were substantially more than 100 years of peace between the two nations. Nevertheless, the peace theme was emphasized at the opening ceremonies which carried significant impact, especially in the aftermath of the Great War.
The United States and Canada share the longest international border in the world (almost 9000 km) and there are well over 100 border crossings. Of these, the Peace Bridge is the second busiest (it used to be first but it was overtaken by the Ambassador Bridge at Detroit). According to its website, it's still the busiest crossing for automobile traffic.
