William Gillette (1853 – 1937) was an American actor, playwright, and stage manager who specialized in playing the role of Sherlock Holmes. A bronze bust depicts him as Sherlock Holmes, a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. William Gillette played Sherlock Holmes on stage more than 1,300 times over thirty years and became immensely popular and wealthy. Gillette Castle was a unique home he built for himself.
Sherlock Holmes as portrayed by William Gillette is wearing a buttoned up jacket with wide lapels and a deerstalker cap. In front of the bust is a plaque which is inscribed:
