Er war als Wilhelm IX. ab 1760 Graf von Hanau, ab 1764 dort Regent und ab 1785 regierender Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel. Aufgrund der 1803 erfolgten Erhebung zum Kurfürsten nannte er sich Wilhelm I.
