FR L'histoire de la construction de l'église Saint-Pierre de Salernes est mal connue. Elle est généralement datée du début du XIIIe siècle en raison de ses parentés architecturales avec l'abbaye du Thoronet. Elle présente aussi de nombreuses analogies avec une famille d'édifices du second art roman varois, caractérisés par la simplicité des formes, la qualité des appareils, la quasi- absence de décor sculpté. Parmi ceux-ci, l'église paroissiale de Cotignac, commune mitoyenne de Salernes, est précisément datée de 1266.

A l'origine, l'édifice présentait un plan en croix latine comportant une nef de trois travées, un transept bas, un choeur formé d'une travée barlongue et d'une abside demi-circulaire voûtée en cul de four. Une voûte en berceau brisée sur arcs doubleaux couvre en continu la nef et le carré du transept, celui-ci surmonté d'un clocher avec toit pyramidal en pierre.

En 1700, la construction d'un collatéral voûté d'arêtes, intégrant le bras nord du transept, a entraîné le percement de grandes arcades dans le mur goutterot nord de l'édifice. Dans le mur sud, les petites baies romanes furent alors remplacées par de grandes fenêtres.

Au XIXe siècle, plusieurs campagnes de travaux se sont succédé. Les plus importantes ont concerné la surélévation des combles de la nef et du transept sud, la transformation des deux absidioles du transept en chapelles à fond plat. L'église fut également dotée d'une tribune ouest et sa sacristie agrandie.

L'ensemble des élévations présente un moyen appareil régulier soigné, qui donne sa principale qualité à cet édifice austère. A l'intérieur, un décor sculpté rare et archaïque se concentre sur les chapiteaux de la nef et du transept. A l'extérieur, dominant le mur-pignon de la façade, la tour de l'horloge est surmontée d'un campanile en ferronnerie du XVIIe siècle.
EN The history of the construction of Saint-Pierre de Salernes church is not well known. It is generally dated to the beginning of the 13th century because of its architectural similarities with the abbey of Thoronet. It also presents many analogies with a family of buildings of the second Romanesque style in Var, characterised by the simplicity of their forms, the quality of their equipment and the virtual absence of sculpted decoration. Among these, the parish church of Cotignac, a neighbouring commune of Salernes, is precisely dated 1266.

Originally, the building had a Latin cross plan with a nave of three bays, a low transept, a choir formed by a barlong bay and a semicircular apse vaulted in cul-de-four. A barrel vault broken on double arches continuously covers the nave and the square of the transept, which is topped by a bell tower with a pyramidal stone roof.

In 1700, the construction of a collateral vaulted ridge, integrating the northern arm of the transept, resulted in the construction of large arches in the northern dripping wall of the building. In the south wall, the small Romanesque bays were replaced by large windows.

In the 19th century, several work campaigns followed one another. The most important ones concerned the elevation of the attic of the nave and the south transept, the transformation of the two apsidoles of the transept into flat-bottomed chapels. The church was also equipped with a western tribune and its sacristy enlarged.

All the elevations have a well-kept regular apparatus, which gives its main quality to this austere building. Inside, a rare and archaic sculptural decoration focuses on the capitals of the nave and transept. Outside, overlooking the gable wall of the facade, the clock tower is surmounted by a 17th century iron belfry.
