Most appropriately, this mural box features an elegantly dressed woman positioned in close proximity to the Ottawa Little Theatre. Wearing an exquisitely tailored and vibrant yellow dress, she is bound to be admired by many of the passers by and theatre goers. Her elegant pose, suggesting a high society member is striking. In keeping with the yellow theme of the mural's composition, one notices birds flying in the background while one waits patiently to be petted or, most likely to be served a few seeds. We also cannot ignore the yellow ribbon that surrounds her head, her pricey necklace and last but not least, her striking décolletage. The composition would not be complete without mentioning the candlesticks resting on the desk, and the drawers bearing fancy handles.
Drew Mandigo created the first seventeen Downtown Rideau Mural Boxes installed in late 2016, from his Auntie Mame Series. Stunning in their originality, Drew’s works feature digital collages of ladies dressed in 1950’s and 60’s fashions, and are inspired by the spirit of the 1958 film of the same name. Several new pieces were released as part of the 2017 mural box expansion project, including one featuring a lady trapped in a glass dome, surrounded by butterflies, and a unique piece dubbed ‘the upside-down lady’.
