The front of the pedestal of the Wignacourt Water Tower decorated with the coat of arms of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the personal arms of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt. The coat of arms of the Knights Hospitaller is a white Latin cross on a red oval field.
The Knights Hospitaller or the Order of Saint John was founded in 1099 by Gerard Thom to provide care for sick, poor or injured pilgrims coming to the Holy Land. After the fall of Jerusalem the Knights settled in Rhodes, Greece before coming to Malta after the conquest of Rhodes by the Ottoman Empire in 1522. The Knights Hospitaller governed Malta until Malta was conquered by Napoleon in 1799.
The French Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt was the 54th Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem from 10 February 1601 to 14 September 1622. He ordered the construction of the aqueduct that brought water to the newly planned city of Valletta. The aqueduct included several water towers for the purification of the water along the way. This water tower was the last tower before Valletta.
