The final resting place of centenarian Carolee Roman (Thomas) Jones is at the east side of Pershing Memorial Cemetery. Her upright marker also gives the DOB and DOD of her son Bill Hoyt.

1945: Battle of Iwo Jima: A group of United States Marines reach the top of Mount Suribachi on the island, and are photographed raising the American flag. The photo, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima (taken by Joe Rosenthal), later wins a Pulitzer Prize.
1955: Winston Churchill resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, due to ill-health, at the age of 80.
