"Si la création du port militaire a été décidée en 1631 par Richelieu, alors surintendant de la Marine et Grand Amiral de France, la construction de l’ouvrage a, elle, démarré en 1683, à une époque où cohabitaient encore ici, les ouvriers de l’arsenal et les marins-pêcheurs.
« La réalisation de cet ouvrage maritime a astucieusement profité de la topographie du lieu, à savoir l’anse naturelle de Trou Lan, dont le fond vaseux a été stabilisé à l’aide de centaines de pieux, comme ceux découvert sous les bassins 2 et 3 lors de leurs réfections au début des années 2000 », explique Hervé Bedri.
Bateau-porte
Si le bassin Tourville a été modifié à plusieurs reprises entre 1845 et 1864, « il sert toujours aujourd’hui à l’entretien des petites unités de la Marine nationale, précise-t-il. Pour cela, la forme de radoub est asséchée grâce à l’emploi d’un bateau-porte qui vient se positionner le long de rainures verticales appelées « buscs ».
L’étanchéïté du bassin est assurée grâce la pression générée par la différence d’hauteur d’eau entre la Penfeld et l’intérieur de la forme, selon une technique inventée dès… 1683 par l’arsenal de Rochefort !
Passé la porte Tourville, la plus ancienne de la base navale de Brest (Finistère), les premiers objets remarquables, témoins du passé du site, et que que le public peut découvrir, ce week-end à l’occasion de son ouverture exceptionnelle dans le cadre des Journées européennes du patrimoine, sont l’hélicoptère Super Frelon, présent ici depuis 2010 (et son remplacement par le Caïman NH90), et le canon du grand cuirassé d’avant-guerre (1935) Richelieu.
Saint-bernard
Le premier est un saint-bernard, héros du secours en mer (près de 300 vies sauvées dans la zone Atlantique). Le second impressionne par ses dimensions : 380 mm de diamètre, 35 km de portée pour ses obus de près d’une tonne !
Tout près, le public pourra embarquer sur le voilier-école Belle-Poule, goélette devant laquelle le club des Amateurs de véhicules anciens du Ponant (Avap) aura disposé (dimanche) ses véhicules des années 30.
Passé le bateau-porte, puis la Consulaire (1830), la cloche de Caffarelli (1803) et celle de Bigot (1741), de l’ancien hôpital maritime, ou bien encore la fontaine Keravel, rares survivants de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le public pourra rencontrer, samedi, les démineurs terrestres du Nédex, avec leurs robots, et tout le week-end, des marins-pompiers et des personnels du Service logistique de la Marine (SLM), autour notamment de leur imprimante 3D.
Le Cirfa renseignera sur les carrières de la Marine, et l’on pourra aussi monter sur le chasseur de mines tripartite ?Pégase ou bien encore admirer, de l’autre côté de la Penfeld, les bassins 2 et 3, le bâtiment aux Lions, la prison Pontaniou ou les Ateliers des Capucins.
Le public pourra embarquer à bord du chasseur de mines tripartite « Pégase » au sein de la base navale de Brest (Finistère), comme ici à bord de « l’Andromède » lors des Journées européennes du patrimoine 2014.
La base navale de Brest n’est pas le seul espace militaire exceptionnellement ouvert en ce week-end. Plus haut, par exemple, la salle des Directeurs de la préfecture maritime de l’Atlantique accueille, parmi ses magnifiques maquettes du Canot de l’Empereur et de la Concorde, une exposition de photographies sur le récent passage du Nord-Est par le Bâtiment d’assistance et de soutien métropolitain (BSAM) Rhône .
Dans la salle des Directeurs, Hervé Bedri présente la maquette de la « Concorde », une frégate trois mâts-carré, construite par l’arsenal de Rochefort-sur-Mer et lancée le 3 septembre 1777. Manœuvrée par 220 membres d’équipage, elle fut envoyée directement aux Antilles, la France s’étant engagée dans la guerre d’indépendance américaine.
L’occasion de découvrir aussi les coursives de la préfecture maritime et le bureau de l’Amiral, ou bien encore, dans le hall d’honneur, une exposition sur la Force océanique stratégique, et notamment le sous-marin d’attaque (SNA) nouvelle génération Barracuda de type Suffren. Sans oublier les animations des associations Bretagne 39-45 et Swing du Tonnerre.
Dans la cour de la préfecture maritime, les membres de la compagnie Swing du Tonnerre feront une démonstration de danse des années 1940-1950, comme ici lors des Journées européennes du Patrimoine 2018.

Door boat
While Tourville Basin was modified several times between 1845 and 1864, "it is still used today to maintain small units of the National Navy," he says. For this purpose, the shape of the refit is dried out thanks to the use of a door boat which is positioned along vertical grooves called "buscs".
The waterproofing of the basin is ensured by the pressure generated by the difference in water height between the Penfeld and the inside of the shape, according to a technique invented as early as... 1683 by the Rochefort arsenal !
Past the Tourville gate, the oldest of the Brest naval base (Finistère), the first remarkable objects that bear witness to the site's past and that the public can discover this weekend on the occasion of its exceptional opening as part of the European Heritage Days are the Super Frelon helicopter, present here since 2010 (and its replacement by the Cayman NH90), and the gun of the great pre-war battleship (1935) Richelieu.
Saint-bernard
The first is a Saint Bernard, a hero of sea rescue (nearly 300 lives saved in the Atlantic zone). The second one impresses by its dimensions: 380 mm in diameter, 35 km range for its shells of nearly a ton!
Nearby, the public will be able to board the sail training ship Belle-Poule, a schooner in front of which the club des Amateurs de véhicules anciens du Ponant (Avap) will have placed (on Sunday) its vehicles from the 1930s.
After passing through the door boat, then the Consular (1830), the Caffarelli bell (1803) and the Bigot bell (1741), the former maritime hospital, or the Keravel fountain, rare survivors of the Second World War, the public will be able to meet, on Saturday, the land deminers of the Nédex, with their robots, and all weekend, firemen and personnel of the Marine Logistics Service (SLM), around their 3D printer.
The Cirfa will provide information on the Navy's careers, and you can also ride on the tripartite Pégase mine hunter or admire, on the other side of the Penfeld, basins 2 and 3, the Lions building, the Pontaniou prison or the Capuchin workshops.
The public will be able to board the tripartite mine hunter "Pégase" at the Brest naval base (Finistère), as here on board the "Andromeda" during the 2014 European Heritage Days.
The Brest Naval Base is not the only exceptionally open military space this weekend. Higher up, for example, the room of the Directors of the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture hosts, among its magnificent models of the Emperor's Canoe and the Concord, an exhibition of photographs on the recent passage of the North-East by the Metropolitan Assistance and Support Building (BSAM) Rhône.
In the Directors' room, Hervé Bedri presented the model of the "Concorde", a three-masted square-masted frigate, built by the arsenal of Rochefort-sur-Mer and launched on 3 September 1777. Manoeuvred by 220 crew members, it was sent directly to the West Indies, France having been involved in the American War of Independence.
It is also an opportunity to discover the passageways of the maritime prefecture and the Admiral's office, or, in the Hall of Honour, an exhibition on the Strategic Oceanic Force, and in particular the new generation Barracuda Suffren-type attack submarine (SNA). Not to mention the activities of the Brittany 39-45 and Swing du Tonnerre associations.
In the courtyard of the maritime prefecture, members of the Swing du Tonnerre company will perform a dance demonstration from the 1940s to the 1950s, as here during the 2018 European Heritage Days.
