On February 11,1861 Abraham Lincoln stopped in Indianapolis and at the site of this marker gave an address. The bronze commemorative plaque is set in a stone which stands on the south side of the present day Indiana Government center.
The text of the marker quotes Lincoln saying:
"I appeal to you to constantly bear in mind that not with politicians, not with presidents, not with office-seekers but with you is the question: shall the union and shall the liberties of this country be preserved to the latest generations."
